Mechanism of Air Operated Diaphragm Pumps | IDEX India
An air operated diaphragm pump is a positive displacement pump that utilizes two flexible diaphragms that reciprocate back and forth to create a temporary chamber to draw in and expel out the fluid from the pump The diaphragms work as a barrier or separation between the air and the liquid. It is one of the most popular types of pumps from the category of positive displacement pumps.  Air Operated Diaphragm Pumps are widely applicable in a lot of industries, and they can handle an extremely wide range of fluids.

How do Air Operated Diaphragm Pumps Work?

The working principle of the pump is on an air displacement principle which is like a separation partition among the air as well as the fluid.

  • First Stroke: The two diaphragms are connected via a shaft through the central section in which the air valve is located. The air valve uses force to direct the compressed air to the back of the first diaphragm and move it away from the middle section.
The first diaphragm creates a pressure stroke that removes fluid from the pump. At the same time, the second diaphragm performs the suction stroke. The air behind the second diaphragm is released to the atmosphere, and atmospheric pressure forces the fluid to the suction side. The suction ball valve is pushed away off its seat allowing the fluid to flow past the ball valve into the liquid chamber.

  • Second Stroke: When the first pressurized diaphragm reaches the end of its stroke, air transfers from the first diaphragm to the back of the second diaphragm through the air valve. The pressurized air pushes the second diaphragm away from the center place, and the first diaphragm is pulled towards the central block.
The outlet ball valve in the second chamber of the pump is pushed out from its seat, while the first chamber has the opposite situation. When the second stroke completes, the air valve pumps air behind the first diaphragm, and the whole cycle repeats.

Where Can Air Operated Diaphragm Pumps Be Used?

The Air Operated Diaphragm Pumps are commonly used in many industries. These pumps are used to push fluids such as
  • Corrosive chemical
  • Volatile solvents
  • Viscous, sticky fluids
  • Shear-sensitive foodstuffs and pharma product
  • Dirty water and abrasive slurry
  • Smaller solids
  • Creams, gels, and oils
